Joe Campbell

Assassination of PS Joseph Campbell - 25.02.1977

Following in a family tradition of Police Service, Sergeant Joseph Campbell served as a respected Catholic Police Officer in the Royal Ulster Constabulary. A father of eight, as Sgt. Campbell left Cushendall Police Station on the 25th February 1977 he was shot dead in a targeted killing, thought to have been committed by members of the Ulster Volunteer Force, a loyalist paramilitary group and terrorist organisation active in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

With no one ever charged for his murder, his family have campaigned for over fourty years for an inquest and investigation into the circumstances around his death. Joe Campbell, his son, believes collusion between the RUC and loyalist paramilitaries ultimately led to his father’s death and has forged close bonds with other victims of the Troubles, currently serving as the UK Ambassador and Events Coordinator for the Truth and Reconciliation Platform - true to his father’s values, he has continually rejected all calls for retaliation against the perpetrators, seeking truth through the justice system.
